Atmel DREAM Sound Synthesis Chip Used in TU-KA's New Cellular Phone Plays Music

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 1, 2001--Atmel® Corporation (Nasdaq:ATML) announced today that the newly announced TK11 ``funstyle®'' Mobile Phone introduced on April 19, 2001 to the Japanese market, uses the Atmel DREAM(TM) SAM9755 sound synthesis IC to power its revolutionary music player, Karaoke, and melody-based ringing tone functions. The TK11 is supplied by TU-KA Cellular Tokyo Inc., TU-KA Phone Kansai and TU-KA Cellular Tokai, all subsidiaries of KDDI, Japan's second largest mobile phone provider.

Hiroshi Yasuda, General Manager of Engineering Department of TU-KA, commented, ``We are excited by the high performance and excellent sound provided by the Atmel DREAM sound synthesis system. It enables us to offer for the first time such functions as MIDI-file playback and Karaoke at professional sound quality. Our customers can load their favorite tunes from our network and listen to them in CD-like sound. We already offer 1,000 melodies, 150 new ones will be added every month. Now users of our newest ''funstyle®`` phone can enjoy their favorite songs wherever they are.''

The new Atmel DREAM SAM9755 IC has been specifically designed for Internet and mobile phone applications. It provides legendary DREAM wavetable sound synthesis, using a 64-voice proprietary synthesizer and effect processor DSP, which in addition, performs audio effects like reverb, chorus, surround and equalizer, supported by an on-chip 32K X 16-bit RAM. A variety of sound sets are available, including GM®/GS® compatible sounds with the express permission of Roland® Corporation. Low power consumption and a space-saving CBGA100 package facilitate the integration of the device in portable equipment.

``It has been a great challenge to design these products using industry-leading DREAM wavetable sound synthesis for applications in mobile phones, in close cooperation with members of the TU-KA team,'' commented Claus Dorner, Vice President Marketing and Sales of DREAM S.A., a wholly owned subsidiary of Atmel Corporation, based in Semur, France. ``The SAM9755 is our first product that not only complies with, but exceeds the new GM-Lite® standard for portable devices such as cellular telephones, games and PDAs which is currently in preparation by the AMEI and the MMA, the two committees responsible for the worldwide MIDI standard.''
